An Indian passport is both a travel document and a powerful proof of citizenship, and the application process has become significantly simpler with the Government's online portal at passportindia.gov.in. Whether you are applying for a fresh passport, renewing an expiring one, or need an urgent Tatkaal passport, this guide walks through the entire process: eligibility, documents required, the online application steps, fees, appointment booking, police verification, and the expected timeline for receiving your passport.

Who Can Apply and Types of Passports

Any Indian citizen can apply for a passport. For minors (below 18 years), the application must be made by a parent or legal guardian. The Passports Act, 1967, and the Passport Rules, 1980, govern the issuance of passports in India. The most common types are the ordinary passport (dark blue cover, 36 or 60 pages, valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors), the official passport (white cover, for Government officials travelling on duty), and the diplomatic passport (maroon cover, for diplomats and senior Government officials). Most applicants will apply for the ordinary passport.

Documents Required

You will need proof of date of birth (birth certificate, school leaving certificate, or matriculation certificate), proof of present address (Aadhaar card, utility bill not older than three months, bank passbook, voter ID, or rental agreement registered with the sub-registrar), and identity proof (Aadhaar, PAN card, voter ID, or driving licence). If you have changed your name after marriage, carry the marriage certificate and the updated Aadhaar or gazette notification. For minors, submit the birth certificate and the parents' passports (if available). For reissue of an expired or expiring passport, carry the old passport along with the above documents. The exact list can vary, so use the Document Advisor tool on the Passport Seva portal to generate a customised checklist.

Step-by-Step Online Application Process

Visit passportindia.gov.in and register with your email address. Once registered, log in and click on 'Apply for Fresh Passport / Reissue of Passport'. Fill out the application form, which asks for personal details, family details, present and permanent address, and emergency contact information. Review the form carefully, as errors can cause delays at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK). After completing the form, pay the application fee online. The fee for a normal 36-page passport with a 10-year validity is Rs 1,500, and for a 60-page booklet it is Rs 2,000. For Tatkaal applications, an additional Rs 2,000 is charged on top of the normal fee. Payment can be made through net banking, credit or debit cards, or UPI. After payment, book an appointment at your nearest PSK or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). Select a date and time slot that suits you.

Visit to the Passport Seva Kendra and Police Verification

On the appointed date, visit the PSK with the original documents and self-attested photocopies. The process at the PSK involves three counters: document verification (Counter A), biometric capture including photograph, fingerprints and digital signature (Counter B), and final verification by the granting officer (Counter C). If everything is in order, police verification is initiated. In many cases, the passport is issued before police verification is completed (this is called 'post-police verification' issuance), and the verification happens afterwards. If police verification reveals an adverse report, the passport may be impounded. For Tatkaal applications where the applicant does not require police verification (for example, if they already hold a passport), the passport can be dispatched within one to three working days.

Timeline and Tracking

For a normal application, the passport is typically dispatched within thirty to forty-five days of the PSK visit, including the time for police verification. For Tatkaal applications, the dispatch happens within one to three working days if police verification is not required, and within two to three weeks if it is. You can track the status of your application at passportindia.gov.in using your application file number. The passport is delivered to your address by Speed Post, and a tracking number is shared via SMS and email.

Key Takeaways

Applying for a passport in India is a largely online process through passportindia.gov.in. Keep your documents ready (Aadhaar, birth certificate, address proof), fill the form carefully, pay the fee, book an appointment, and visit the PSK. Normal processing takes thirty to forty-five days; Tatkaal processing is significantly faster but costs Rs 2,000 more. Track your application online and ensure your address is accessible for the police verification officer. The process is designed to be straightforward, and most applicants complete it without difficulty.
