Knowing how to apply for a ration card online in India saves multiple trips to the food and civil supplies office and unlocks subsidised foodgrains, identity documentation and access to several welfare schemes. Ration cards are issued by state governments under the framework of the National Food Security Act, 2013, and almost every state now accepts online applications through its own food department portal.

This guide explains who is eligible, which documents you need, how the online process works and what to do after you apply.

Types of Ration Cards Under the NFSA

Under the National Food Security Act, 2013, beneficiaries are identified by state governments in two main categories. Antyodaya Anna Yojana cards cover the poorest households, which receive a fixed quantity of foodgrains per family each month. Priority Household cards cover households that meet state specific inclusion criteria, with entitlements calculated per person. States also issue non NFSA cards, often called APL or non priority cards, which serve mainly as identity and address documentation.

Identification of beneficiaries is a state subject, so the income ceilings and inclusion criteria differ from state to state. Check your own state's food department website for the precise eligibility rules before applying.

Who Can Apply and What You Need

The applicant must be an Indian citizen, and the card is issued in the name of the head of the household, who should be an adult. Most states require that the family ordinarily resides in the state and that no member already holds a ration card in any other state. Commonly required documents include Aadhaar for all family members, proof of residence such as an electricity bill or rent agreement, an income certificate where the state requires one, a passport size family photograph and bank account details.

If you do not yet have supporting identity documents, it is worth securing them first. See our guides on applying for a PAN card online and getting a domicile certificate for the underlying paperwork.

Step 1: Find Your State Food Department Portal

There is no single national application form. The NFSA portal at nfsa.gov.in links to every state and union territory portal. For example, Uttar Pradesh applications go through fcs.up.gov.in, Bihar through epds.bihar.gov.in, Maharashtra through mahafood.gov.in and Karnataka through ahara.kar.nic.in. Many states also accept applications through Common Service Centres and some through state service portals such as e-District.

Step 2: Fill the Application and Upload Documents

Register on the portal with your mobile number, select the new ration card application, and enter details of the head of household and every family member, including each member's Aadhaar number, date of birth and relationship to the head. Upload the supporting documents in the prescribed format and submit. Note the application or acknowledgement number for tracking.

Step 3: Verification and Issuance

After submission, the food and civil supplies department verifies the application, which may include a field visit by an inspector. Application is generally free or carries a nominal fee depending on the state. Processing commonly takes around 30 days, though actual timelines vary by state and verification workload. Once approved, the digital ration card can usually be downloaded from the state portal, and the physical card follows. You can check your name in the beneficiary list on nfsa.gov.in.

One Nation One Ration Card and Aadhaar Seeding

The One Nation One Ration Card system allows NFSA beneficiaries to draw their foodgrain entitlement from any fair price shop in the country using Aadhaar authentication, which is especially useful for migrant workers. For this to work, every family member's Aadhaar should be seeded to the ration card. The Mera Ration mobile app helps beneficiaries locate fair price shops and check entitlements.

Because Aadhaar authentication is central to ration delivery, protect it from misuse. Our guide on checking your Aadhaar authentication history and locking biometrics explains the safeguards.

Key Takeaways

Ration cards are issued by states under the National Food Security Act, 2013, with eligibility and income ceilings varying by state. Apply on your state food department portal with Aadhaar for all members, residence proof and an income certificate where required. Processing is generally free or low cost and commonly takes about a month. Seed Aadhaar for all members to use One Nation One Ration Card portability, and track your application and beneficiary status online rather than visiting the office.
