Anyone involved in litigation can check court case status online in India within minutes, without calling a lawyer or visiting the court. The eCourts project of the Department of Justice covers district and taluka courts across the country, while the Supreme Court and High Courts run their own status portals. This guide explains every search method, what the CNR number is and how to track hearings through the eCourts mobile app.

What Is a CNR Number

The CNR, or Case Number Record, is a unique 16 character alphanumeric code assigned to every case filed in a district or taluka court in India. It encodes the state, district, court establishment, filing number and year. The CNR appears on court orders, case papers and notices, often alongside a QR code. Searching by CNR is the fastest and most reliable way to pull up a case, because it avoids the ambiguity of party names and similar case numbers across courts.

Step 1: Search on the eCourts Portal

Go to services.ecourts.gov.in. If you have the CNR number, enter it in the CNR search box with the captcha, and the full case record opens: parties, advocates, filing and registration numbers, next hearing date, case stage and order history. Orders uploaded by the court can be viewed and downloaded as PDFs.

Step 2: Search Without a CNR Number

If you do not know the CNR, click Case Status on the portal and search by other parameters. The portal supports searching by case number and year, party name, advocate name, filing number and FIR number, after selecting the state, district and court complex. Party name search is useful when you only know who is litigating; FIR number search helps in criminal matters when you know the police station and FIR details.

Step 3: Use the eCourts Services Mobile App

The eCourts Services app is available on Google Play and the Apple App Store. It mirrors the portal's search options and adds practical features: you can save cases to My Cases, receive notifications about listing and progress, scan the QR code printed on case documents to open the record instantly, and view cause lists for any court. The same services are also accessible through the UMANG app.

Supreme Court and High Court Case Status

The Supreme Court provides case status at sci.gov.in, searchable by case number, diary number, party name or advocate, and also by CNR. Each High Court runs its own case status section on its website, and most are integrated with the National Judicial Data Grid, which publishes statistics on pendency. For consumer fora, tribunal matters and commissions, separate portals apply, so check the forum's own website.

Reading the Case Status Page Correctly

A few fields cause confusion. The case stage describes the current procedural step, such as evidence, arguments or orders. The next date is the next listing, but cases can be advanced or adjourned, so check again the evening before. Disposed means the court has decided or closed the case; the disposal nature tells you whether it was decided on merits, dismissed for default or withdrawn. Order copies on the portal are for information; certified copies for legal use are obtained from the court's copying section or through online certified copy services where available.

Litigants tracking a case often need the next procedural move. If you are a defendant facing imminent adverse action, see our guide on getting a stay order from court. Accused persons monitoring an FIR can read our guide on quashing an FIR under Section 528 BNSS.

If You Cannot Find Your Case

Newly filed cases can take a few days to appear after registration. Verify the spelling of party names, try the filing number instead of the registration number, and confirm the correct court complex. If you still cannot locate the matter and cannot afford a lawyer to assist, you may qualify for free help; see our guide on applying for free legal aid through NALSA.

Key Takeaways

Every district court case in India has a 16 character CNR number that retrieves the full record on services.ecourts.gov.in. Without a CNR, search by case number, party name, advocate or FIR number. The eCourts Services app adds saved cases, alerts and QR scanning, while the Supreme Court and High Courts run their own portals. Check status the evening before a hearing, and remember that online copies are informational; certified copies come from the court.
