S.O. 1232(E) dated 9 March 2026 gazette notification may have a much wider contractual and commercial impact than it first appears.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued S.O. 1232(E) under the Essential Commodities framework, recording disruption in liquefied natural gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and the invocation of force majeure by suppliers. The result is a statutory mechanism for diversion and priority allocation of natural gas across specified sectors.

This is not just a sectoral gas-supply issue. It may affect any business that contracts with gas-dependent suppliers, relies on gas-linked manufacturing or logistics, or sits downstream of a supply chain that may now face reallocation, curtailment, pooled pricing, or force majeure-based disruption.

This is a break down of:

  1. who the order directly applies to,

  2. what the Central Government has specifically directed,

  3. who may be indirectly affected downstream, and

  4. what businesses and legal teams should start reviewing immediately from 9 March 2026 onward.

The immediate takeaway is simple: this is the time to re-read your contracts carefully: especially force majeure, notice requirements, allocation/diversion rights, payment consequences, and the effect of a statutory order overriding inconsistent commercial arrangements.

One important legal distinction: the trigger here is disruption of LNG shipments, not disruption of consumer LPG cylinder supply as such. That distinction matters when assessing actual contractual exposure.

As always, please read the notification yourself and apply your own interpretation. If I have got anything wrong, please do correct me.
