Udyam Registration is the government's online system for registering Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India. It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system with effect from July 1, 2020, pursuant to a notification issued by the Ministry of MSME under Section 7 of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006 (MSMED Act). Registration is entirely free, paperless, and based on self-declaration through the Udyam portal (udyamregistration.gov.in). This guide covers the complete process.

MSME Classification Criteria

The revised classification criteria, effective from July 1, 2020, apply uniformly to both manufacturing and service enterprises. A Micro Enterprise has investment up to Rs 1 crore and turnover up to Rs 5 crore. A Small Enterprise has investment up to Rs 10 crore and turnover up to Rs 50 crore. A Medium Enterprise has investment up to Rs 50 crore and turnover up to Rs 250 crore. Both criteria (investment in plant and machinery or equipment, and annual turnover) must be satisfied. Export turnover is excluded from the turnover calculation. The investment and turnover data are linked to the enterprise's Income Tax Return and GST return data.

Step-by-Step Registration Process

Step 1: Visit the Udyam Registration portal at udyamregistration.gov.in. Step 2: Enter your Aadhaar number. For proprietorship firms, the proprietor's Aadhaar is required. For partnership firms, LLPs, and companies, the Aadhaar of the managing partner or authorised signatory is used along with the GSTIN and PAN of the organisation. Step 3: Validate your Aadhaar through OTP verification. Step 4: Fill in the enterprise details including name, type of organisation, PAN, address, date of commencement, bank account details, and NIC code (National Industrial Classification) for the business activity. Step 5: Declare investment and turnover figures through self-declaration. The portal automatically validates these against IT and GST databases. Step 6: Submit the form. Upon successful submission, an e-certificate called the Udyam Registration Certificate is generated with a permanent Udyam Registration Number (URN) in the format UDYAM-XX-00-0000000.

Benefits of Udyam Registration

Registered MSMEs receive several statutory and financial benefits. These include priority sector lending from banks at lower interest rates, collateral-free loans under the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) scheme, protection against delayed payments under Sections 15 to 24 of the MSMED Act (buyers must pay within 45 days, failing which compound interest at three times the bank rate is payable), exemption from direct tax under Section 80JJAA of the Income Tax Act for new employees, preference in government procurement (Government e-Marketplace mandates 25% procurement from MSMEs, with 4% from SC/ST-owned and 3% from women-owned enterprises), reimbursement of ISO certification expenses, concession on electricity bills in some states, and eligibility for various Central and State government subsidy schemes. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Applicants should ensure that the Aadhaar number entered matches the one linked to their PAN. If the enterprise has a PAN and GST registration, these must be correctly linked during the registration process. Enterprises must update their Udyam Registration if there is a change in investment or turnover that alters their classification category. Failure to update can result in loss of benefits applicable to the correct category. Only one Udyam Registration is permitted per enterprise; multiple registrations for the same entity are not allowed.
